CityView Employee Wins Third Place Pipe Championship
September 9, 2019

One of CityView’s very own, Doug Thorsteinson, Director of Professional Services, took third place in the North Berwick Highland Games (Grade 4A division), which is part of the larger World Pipe Championships that took place this August in Glascow, Scotland.

The World Pipe Championships is an annual two-day competition that showcases the extraordinary ability of 8,000 pipers and drummers taking part. Doug, his wife and daughter all play for the Greater Victoria Police Pipe Band.

Check out their winning performance:

The band stayed in the dorms of Glasgow Caledonian University - not exactly a romantic getaway as they each had a small room with a single bed, desk, washroom and closet.

The band practiced together every day for ten days in preparation. Two years ago, when the band competed, they came in 10thoverall with the drum corp taking 8th in the world for the Grade 4A division. This year, they came to win it!

Doug is the bass drummer; his daughter Chelsea (pictured, above third from left) is a tenor drummer, and his wife Shelley is a piper. In fact, Shelley is the Honourary Pipe Major for British Columbia’s Lieutenant Governor.

Despite the pouring rain (it is Scotland, after all), the team maintained their dedication and gathered outside for practice, which evidently paid off in the end:

Congratulations, Doug!
